Nduduzo Makhatini Captivates at New York’s World Famous Blue Note Jazz Club
In September 2018, Emirates and Universal Music Group (UMG) launched ‘Pursuit of Jazz’, a nationwide talent hunt for emerging jazz musicians who will carry South Africa’s rich jazz history and traditions forward. January 7 saw renowned South African Jazz Musician, Nduduzo Makhatini captivate a full audience at New York’s World Famous Blue Note Jazz Club. Makhatini performed his breathtaking “Letters from the Underworlds Project” featuring Aaron Burnett on Tenor Sax (US), Logan Richardson on Alto Sax (US), Lesedi Ntsane on Trumpet (SA/US), Burniss Travis on Double Bass (US) and Nasheet Waits on Drums (US).
Makhatini described his experience as “filled with gratitude” and as one that he hoped would give the audience a connection to Africa in spirit. “Something special happens especially towards redefining what the anthology or cosmology of what an African people is about,” he said. Solos performed on piano and sax delivered deep curiousity to the metaphor that is jazz.
